Leather Honey versus Saddle Soap

Leather Honey was invented over 50 years ago by our grandfather. We began using his leather conditioner formula on our family farm decades ago, and decided to finally bring it to market once we realized the broad appeal. Leather Honey is the ideal leather conditioner for all leather leather types, from the saddles and tack we’ve long used it on to leather car seats, clothing, handbags, furniture and more. We’ve never changed the formula, because we’ve never had to! There’s no room for improvement here. It’s the best leather conditioner on the market, and we’re confident it always will be.

As long-time leather care experts, we’re frequently asked for our opinion on saddle soap. One of the most common questions we receive is how does saddle soap compare to Leather Honey leather conditioner and leather cleaner?

Use this table to compare Leather Honey to the standard saddle soap formulation:

Standard Saddle Soap Formulation

  • Water repellent
  • Unscented
  • Natural formula
  • Contains no animal products
  • Contains no wax
  • Non-toxic
  • Contains no silicone
  • Treatment lasts six months or longer
  • Made in the USA
  • Unlimited 100% satisfaction guarantee
  • Free shipping
  • Family-owned business

In general, our answer is that when it comes to leather conditioning and cleaning, there are no shortcuts: two separate products are better than an all-in-one cleaning and conditioning combination. While many products purport to condition and clean your leather at the same time, you’ll sacrifice conditioning almost every time. That’s because the cleaning agents in the product typically prevent the conditioner from working as well as it could on its own.

Don’t worry! That’s why we offer two products to meet the needs of all leather: Start by cleaning your leather with our leather cleaner, then using our leather conditioner to restore lost moisture and make your leather last a lifetime. The beauty of Leather Honey Leather Conditioner is that it penetrates deeply into the leather and stays there, which means you only need to condition once every six months.

What else should you look for in a leather conditioner? We recommend avoiding products that contain wax, animal products (like lanolin) and silicone, as these tend to do more harm than good over time.

Our customers say it best. Here are some recent Amazon.com testimonials:

I have a lot of old tack that has been sitting in my dry Colorado barn for years, even long before I bought the property. In particular there is an old mule collar that I thought would be a great nostalgic piece to hang in my tack room. I cleaned it up with saddle soap, but the years and the dry air had made it brittle and nearly colorless. I needed a leather restorer, and skipped the ranch store for a Google search. I came across this product and ordered a bottle. I read the recommendations for use posted by others, and when my order arrived, I gave it a try. It truly brought the collar back to life, softening the dried out leather and giving it a rich Havana color. I will now repurpose it into a tack room mirror.

Recently purchased new, very expensive leather couch, club chair and ottoman which the dogs are enjoying very much! They have quickly scratched up the leather by nesting when the are looking to sit. I did use a few commercial leather cleaners, olive oil and saddle soap but all wore off quickly. Using the Leather Honey is a dream. It not only restores the look off the worn areas but also the color and leaves it very supple. I will be buying more!

This is **amazing** stuff! I had a pair of boots with some crazy powdery bloom on it — never worn, so it couldn't have been any road salts, etc. Most possibly badly tanned leather. HOURS of previous efforts included saddle soap, some aerosol leather cleaner, rubbing alcohol — nothing worked as the powdery stuff always came back worse than before — but this stuff and the cleaner pulled off a miracle. This was my hail mary and it totally saved them!
