  • Maximizing the Life of Leather Work Boots

leather-work-bootsA quality pair of leather work boots costs a significant amount, and as such you want to do all you can to keep them in good condition for as many years as possible. Yet, if your boots are getting used in the field every day, they are going to take a beating. To keep your boots in the best possible condition, you will need to take proper care of them, and these tips will help.

    Condition the Leather Regularly

First, remember that leather is made from the hide of an animal that was once living. This means that it once received natural oil and moisture from the animal. Now that the leather has been cured, it will no longer receive natural moisture, so you need to add that moisture to keep the leather soft and prevent cracking.

Leather Honey, Amazon.com’s top-selling leather conditioner, is simple to use and will add this necessary moisture to your boots. Simply rub the Leather Honey onto clean, dry boots, and allow it to dry overnight. Then, remove the excess and the boots are ready to be worn. The Leather Honey will rehydrate the boots and help repel water to keep them in their best condition.

Since boots being used regularly in the field take a beating and are exposed to the elements more than other leather shoes, you will find that they need to be conditioned more regularly.

    Clean Up Dirt

Wearing your boots in the field is going to mean dirt and grime gets on them. This needs to be removed regularly to help extend the life of the boots. All you need to remove dried-on dirt and grit is a cheap plastic cleaning brush. Take the brush to the boots to remove caked on dirt, but don’t press too hard. You don’t want to grind the dirt into the leather. Simply brush gently to dislodge the dirt and debris. Do this outside, if possible, because it will get grime everywhere.

If additional dirt remains on the boot, give it a quick wash using mild soap and warm water. Do not use any additional products on the boots, as they could diminish the ability for the boots to absorb the leather conditioner properly. Follow this cleaning protocol whenever your boots need to be cleaned and prior to using Leather Honey.

    Repair As Needed

Because of the amount of money you’ve invested in your boots, you may wish to repair them when the soles get worn or a stitch works itself loose. Repairs are often more affordable than replacement, and if you use Leather Honey regularly, the leather itself should hold up well for many years. The trick to getting your boots repaired is finding a quality shoe repair professional. If you can find one in your area who has reasonable rates and quality repair services, utilize them to keep your boots working well for many years to come.

If you regularly condition and clean your boots and have them repaired when warranted, you’ll find that they last a long time. This will help keep more money in your pocket, as you will be able to avoid replacing this vital part of your work wardrobe prematurely. Take care of your boots, and they will keep your feet protected for several years.

      Hi Joe,

You can apply it to brand new boots to protect them from the elements and make sure they stay moisturized. Leather Honey is water-repellent; if you want to apply a water proof product, do so after you apply Leather Honey and after the Leather Honey has completely dried and absorbed. A mild soap could be liquid dish detergent or a leather cleaner.
